Cavite-based enterprises, Purefoods-Hormel Company, Inc. – Cavite Plant and Sir Ezer Bakery & Variety Store, underwent Food Safety Training last 15-16 March and 17 March 2022, respectively.
The Department of Science and Technology Provincial Science and Technology Center in Cavite (DOST-Cavite), together with the DOST-CALABARZON Food Safety Team, organized the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) Training for the 28 employees of Purefoods, and the Basic Food Hygiene Seminar for Sir Ezer Bakery.

Senior citizen farmers in Rizal get training on how to make organic fertilizers

Angono New Normal Farmers’ Association (ANNFA)—a people’s organization of senior citizen farmers based in Angono, Rizal—received Training on Natural Farm Input Preparation and Application last 17 March 2022 in Hillsdale Subdivision, Barangay Isidro, Angono, Rizal.
The Department of Science and Technology Provincial Science and Technology Center in Rizal (DOST-Rizal) organized the activity, inviting Mr. Villamor A. Ladia, Jr., University Researcher, and Mr. Anthony Vicencio, Farm Manager, both from the Institute of Plant Breeding of the University of the Philippines Los Baños, as resource speakers.
Formed at the height of the pandemic, ANNFA was organized to respond to food security issues in Angono. To help the community vegetable farmers of ANNFA sustain their production while minimizing their production expenses, DOST-Rizal facilitated the conduct of the training, complementing its other initiatives under the DOST – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD)-funded project, "Employing Hydroponics and Community Vegetable Gardening Technologies to alleviate COVID-19 Threats to Food Security in Selected Municipalities in Region IV-A."

Empowering women on Women’s Day: MABLEA gets training on bread, pastry production

Members of the Mabini Tablea Food Producers (MABLEA), a women’s association in Mabini, Batangas, were trained on bread and pastry production alongside with the celebration of the International Women’s Day, March 8-10.
The training upskilled the women members of the association and provided them with additional product line aside from their tablea-based products developed by the Institute of Food Science and Technology - University of the Philippines Los Baños (IFST-UPLB) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Batangas in 2018. The association has been known in the locality as the sole producer of tablea-based products such as tablea chocolate spread, tablea-peanut bar or tabnut, tablea flan (tablea-flavored leche flan), tablea-peanut butter spread, and tablea chocolate candies, among others. Since then, they have also been braving to spearhead the revitalization of the tablea industry in the Municipality of Mabini, Batangas through their community enterprise supported by the Soroptimist International of Mabini (SI-Mabini), a volunteer service organization for women, the Local Government Unit of Mabini (LGU-Mabini), and DOST-Batangas.

Mira’s Turmeric Products in Lipa City receives refresher training on food safety

Mira’s Turmeric Products, a turmeric, ginger, and other herbal products producer in Brgy. San Salvador, Lipa City strengthened their food safety system implementation through a refresher training on food safety facilitated by Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Batangas, 8 March 2022.
The company is one of the cooperators of the DOST-Batangas’ Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) and has always been consistent in ensuring their compliance to food safety standards through acquisition of various accreditations such as license to operate (LTO) from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and HALAL compliance certificate, among others. To them, consumers’ safety is part of their business’ bloodline, and it must always be secured at all times. Hence, the refresher training served as a platform for reviewing and updating of the company workers’ understanding on the current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) requirements, the importance and the benefits of GMP implementation in their food business, and compliance to the stipulations of the Food Safety Act of 2013 RA 10611.

Innovating and Making a Difference: DOST-CALABARZON Technologies for the New Normal

Empowered by its culture of innovativeness, the technologies that the Department of Science and Technology – CALABARZON (DOST-CALABARZON)’s Management Information Systems (MIS) Unit developed proved useful in easing the transition towards the New Normal.
The systems HRMIS, TRACE, TRADE, KMIS, and IMPRESSION, already in-use prior to the pandemic, easily complement the work-from-home arrangement. As of 2021, the MIS Unit has developed 25 systems, including the recently deployed QMIS, and the Contactless Attendance System (CAS) Terminal. These systems, among others that the MIS Unit designed, have already been adopted by other institutions nationwide to support their operations despite the challenges of the pandemic.
