To enhance the development of the science tourism in Los Baños, the Los Baños Science Community Foundation Inc. (LBSCFI), Department of Tourism IV-A (DOT IV-A), and Department of Education IV-A (DepEd IV-A) inked a Memorandum of Understanding last December 6 at DOST-PCAARRD Innovation and Technology Center (DPITC) as part of the Launching of Science Tourism Program. Dr. Alexander Madrigal, LBSCFI President and DOST-CALABARZON Regional Director, formally welcomed the participants. He enlightened how this science tourism project will promote more the Los Baños as a Special Science and Nature City.
Dir. Roberto Cereno, LBSCFI Tourism Committee Chairperson and TREES-UPLB Director, said in his event rationale, the scope of the project which dwells in Science in Tourism and Tourism in Science. He explained that Science in Tourism will show how science is integrated in tourism-related products, services, and sites like Lety’s Buko Pie, Zeny’s Banana Chips, and Mount Makiling Forest Reserve. Furthermore, Tourism in Science deals with transforming S&T ideas, discoveries, and breakthroughs into awe-inspiring tourist attractions such as IRRI Rice World and UPLB Museum of Natural History.
Moreover, Dir. Rebecca Labit, DOT IV-A Regional Director, shares that the CALABARZON Region ranks #1 in number of same day visitor count. When this project was presented to them, she immediately gave her commitment to help boost the science tourism. Dir. Labit also encouraged the participants that if everyone will be on the same boat with them, this project will surely be successful.
The highlight of this event is the forging of the partnership among Dr. Madrigal, Dir. Labit, and Prof. Bernon Abellera to represent Dr. Allan Hostalero, Public School District Supervisor of DepEd Los Baños.
This two-year project aims to contribute to the attainment of sustainable development goals of the Municipality of Los Baños through the preparation and implementation of a strategic action plan that will chart a pioneering and distinctive tourism brand called Science Tourism not only in Los Baños but in the region as well. This also aspires to make a landmark in the history of international tourism.
This event was attended by national and local media, principals and teachers in Los Baños schools, and representatives of LBSCFI member agencies.
