In celebration of the International Women’s Day, the Department of Science and Technology – CALABARZON (DOST-CALABARZON) joined the Walk for a Cause Parade organized by the Local Government Unit – Los Baños last March 8 from Olivarez Plaza to Los Baños Municipal Hall. The parade was participated by the agencies in Los Baños Science Community, barangays in Los Baños, members of the 4Ps, and public and private schools in Los Baños.
A short program followed after the parade in the Los Baños Municipal Hall. This year, women cancer patients will be the beneficiaries of the fund collected from the walk. Sangguniang Bayan Councilor Josephine Sumangil-Evangelista of LGU-LB, in her opening remarks, said that the participants did not just only enjoy the walk but they have also helped to contribute to the funds for these cancer patients. Moreover, Ms. Hanna Lavinia, OIC-MSDWO, reported the collection of Special Women’s Fund for 2017 and 2018. A total of Php99,052 was collected and brought assistance to female patients in different barangays in Los Baños. As of March 2018, they have already collected Php22,000 to be used in supporting more patients this year.
Mayor Caesar Perez thanked everyone who organized and participated in the event. He mentioned that this activity showed that women have the strength to uplift our community and country once they joined together.
Also part of the celebration is the Serbisyo para kay Juana where free haircut, manicure, pedicure, massage, and consultations were provided to the participants after the program.
Last March 6, an advocacy walk and a kick-off program held at the University of the Philippines Los Baños upper campus was also participated by DOST-CALABARZON. It was attended by the different agencies in and around the UPLB Community. Also present in the event is SB Councilor Sumangil-Evangelista together with the bikers of Los Baños.
For years, DOST-CALABARZON has been actively participating in the intents to promote women empowerment in the region. Just this December 2017, DOST-CALABARZON partook in the 18-day campaign to end violence against women (VAW) with the theme: “VAW-free community starts with me”. Moreover, the office’s Gender and Development representative attended the Regional Gender and Development Convention for Quezon in October 2017.
DOST-CALABARZON also supported the Department of Trade and Industry’s Great Women Project 2 (GWP2) by extending its help in the nutritional facts analysis, labeling and packaging, and the automation/technology upgrading for the products of Women Micro Entrepreneurs (WME).
In the following years, DOST-CALABARZON will continue to support and promote women empowerment especially in the region.
